Mobile Sound Practices as Situated Composition in Ambiances

This article provides an investigation of recent transformations in mobile, sound-based practices through the idea of ‘situated composition’. After discussing situated composition as an approach, I draw on interviews with people who use mobile sound production tools and techniques, on online forums and podcasts, and on my own artistic practice to inform a brief analysis of four ways in which people engage with their surroundings and ambiances during situated compositional practices using mobile devices.
