The present paper attempts to investigate the concept and the effect of at-mosphere as a critical meta-phenomenological dimension of contemporary design through three directions: first, it focuses on the origin of this concept, linking it with a phenomenological version derived from romantic tradition and often relating it with spatial qualities such as character, intimacy and emotive corporal experience in a specific place. In the next section, the paper investi-gates similarities and differences between Merleau-Ponty’s and Deleuze’s thought on perception and spatial experience. Finally, contemporary poststruc-turalist approaches are analyzed, in which atmosphere constitutes a dynamic parameter with intensive qualities of boundary, a threshold to transforming spatial situations and correlations, a tempοrary yet significant topological struc-ture of the sense and sensation syntheme.
