This paper deals with how ambiances can help to create a continuity with the spirit of a place within a contemporary architecture; the study cases are an oasian town located in the south west of Tunisia, Nefta and a modern project of a small hotel Dar Hi. The method used for the description of Nefta’s atmospheres is a combination between participant observation, photos, sounds and videos material, tellings of citizens and analysis of traveller’s stories to access shared sensory perceptions. The research aims to analyse which are architectural ways that create new ambiances inspired from the Nefta’s ones and able to harmonise with the spirit of the place.
