Public Space and its animation were provided jointly by commercial, cultural and leisure activities injected, and by society who practiced them. The cosmopolitan population of the colonial Algiers has introduced an art of living and consuming the city with the mixture of cultures and living patterns both imported and acquired. Declined under different forms, these ambiences are expressed in the old documents, literary texts, iconography, especially photographs. So various urban ambiences have been identified in terms of spatiality, temporality, sociality, emotions and sensory. Philologists and metrological studies highlighting their ambient qualities would help to promote the rehabilitation of Algiers’ public spaces for downtown development.
